UNION FINANCES
A correspondent, "Ray," complains that members of the Cooks' and Stewards' Union have been notified that, unless their union dues are paid one month in advance, they will not be eligible to sign on ships' articles. It is urged that this will cause hardship to members who have been unemployed and dependent on relief work. Further, it is unnecessary, as the union's assets exceed liabilities by £13,860 and £9921 is out at interest, tho greater part being lout to the Trades and Labour Council. The union has dealt generously with the Trades Council and the political Labour Party, and the executive should understand the position of its less fortunate members. On inquiry a "Post" reporter was informed that, the rule referred to had been in force' since 1921, and that it was necessary to apply it in fairness to members who made their payments promptly.
