NOTES AND COMMENTS

(BY "RANGATIRA.")

NEW PLYMOUTH RACES

COMBINED HUNTS MEETING

GOOD FIELDS ARE CARDED

Good fields-have accepted for all events on the first day of the Taranaki and Eg-fflont-Wanganui Hunt Clubs' Combined Annual Meeting at New Plymouth tomor-, row, and although many of the horse's en-1 gaged are backward or little-known candidates the racing generally should be interesting as serving to give a preliminary line on meetings to follow. There has been miuch rain in Taranaki recently, and the going is certain to be heavy. Following the customary rule at New Plymouth meetings now the betting will be conducted under the win-and-place system. As the -fields stand there are ample runners for three place dividends in all ■ events, but the betting will mostly be confined to a few horses in each race. The programme and prospects are: — 12.15: TKIAL HUNTERS' STEEPLECHASE, . £33 and trophy; about 2 miles. Anchlses , .... JO 0 Mataro JO 0 Kalteremal .. 10 0 Sleepy 10 0 Cyulcal Kid ..10 0 Kazor 10 0 Clcnicourier .10 0 Ashes 10 0 King Colo .... 10 0 The Storm Wind 10 0 Shamln 10 0 Dozle 10 0 Va-y little public form has been shown by any of the runners in the Trial Hunters' Steeplechase, which is open only to hunters who have never won a race at a totalisator meeting. Cynical Kid has been working well at Hawera and he may be, the favourite. The Storm Wind was out in front till he ran off at Awapuni, up till when he had fenced well. Sbamiu and Mataro filled places iv the Taranaki Hunt Cup last year, and Kaiteremai has done a fair amount of work. Three who will probably be backed are Cynical Kid, lhe Storm Wind, and Shainin. 1.0: WEREROA SCURRY, £30; » furlongs. Colossal .... S 0 General Qucx. S 0 High Exchange S 0 Chlkara ..... Colossal and Harvest Moon have run seme fine races recently, and on the heavy track the former appears the likelier. Peter's Pence and General Quex have also shown promise, and others who have raced are Bay Sand, Sandlark, and Red I?ox. Wellbred newcomers include the three-year-olds, Friesland, Chikara, Kingside, and Spender., A trio who may be supported are Colossal, Peter's Pence," and General Ques. •' '. 1.45: WHENUAKURA HACK HANDICAP, £60; ' 7 furlongs.' ■ . , Tattoru 9 0 Jthan / 7 8 St. Clara .... SO Prince Reno .. 7 6 Artful Dodger . 8 0 Benedictine ..7 3 Silk Sox .... 712 Tahuranci .".10 Although recent winning lorm is lacking moat of the acceptors for the YVbeuuakiira Hack Handicap have done some racinsj during the winter. Taitoru failed at Otaki, but he was ranged against open performers there and should appreciate the return to hack class. ■ St. Clara and Silk Box have been working well at Hawera, and Ytban, Spearform ,_ and Tahurangi have shown up in recent races. St. Clara and Ythan were both winners at the meetings last year Latest form seems mainly to favour these half-dozen horses, and the likeliest of them may be Taitoru, Ythan, : and Spearform. : 2.30: EGMONT-WANGANUI HUNT CUP HANDICAP, £100 and trophy; about 2Vi lnilds. Lucess It 12 Ngarela .... 10 0 Don Erma .... 11 0 Mataro \ 10 0' Flower Bag ..11 0 Sleepy 10 o Cardhu ..... 10 8 ; Razor 10 0 Coonooi .... 10 7 Kaola ...... 10 0 Hard Gold ... 10 5 Gory Mor ... 10 0 Anchlses ... 10 0 v Following his impressive victory in the Pakuranga Hunt Cup Flower Bag promises to make most appeal to investors in the Egmont-Wanganui Hunt Cup Steeples, i and critics who saw him race in the north are confident he will again go well. However, one does not feel disposed to overlook Luccss's great chance in such a field as this,- for a year ago he was not much ; below top open class, and Don Erma is another good jumper with a fairly recent [ win over Riotous to his credit. Coonoor, I Hard Gold, Cardhu, Xgareta, and Rory Mor are other prospects. A sound trio should be Lucess,'Flower Bag, and Don Erma. ■ / •'3.13: WAIHAU■HANDICAP (open), £70; 6 furlongs. Oiapai 1) 0 I.alla Quex ..7 8 , ' Ago, Khan ... S 7 Plying Prince . 7 8 The Tiger .... S i Prolyso . 7 6 Carter 8 4 Moatoa ■. 7 '& Korokio .... 7,11 Green Linnet . 7 2 A really capital field is carded to go to the post in the Waihau Handicap. Orapai is galloping attractively, but he may require a race. The Tiger will-relish the going, and he was a winner at Wanganui ■in May at his last start. Korokio went a great fourth first up after a spell at Awapuni last month, and Moatoa'showed sufficient form to be taken down to the recent Grand National Meeting. Aga Khan is probably backward, and Carfes, though the winner of the corresponding race in. a poor field twelve months ago, may find the . distance too short. Lalla Q'tisx and Prolyso are other possibles. Good efforts may be expected from The Tiger, Korokio, and Jfoatoa. . 4.0 : LADIES' ERACKLET HANDICAP, £G0 :. and trophy; 1% miles. Klack Man ... 12 8 Captain Dan . 11 3 \ Santoft 12 2 Kaitercma! ..11 0 ; March- Alone . 12 0 Cynical Kid .. 11 0 ■ Crenna Town .12 0 fluaform .... 11 0 ' Artful Dodger 12 0 Susie Pyo ...11 0 Hukemami ... 31 11 Burnwood ... H 0 Silent Bill ... 11 11 The Ark' .... 11 0 War Eagle ... 11 3 No Humbug . 11 0 The Ladies' Bracelet Handicap is for gentlemen riders. Santoft has won two puch races on end, and he should again be hard to beat. Black Man, better ridden than at Manawatu, might trouble him more on this occasion, and Hukewanu and Silent Bill also have recent win'iing form. March Alone, Artful Dodger, War Eagle, Captain Dan, and Cynical Kid are others with chances. Form point mainly to Santoft, Black Man, and . Hukemanu. ■Ui: WAVJ3BLKV HACK HANDICAP, £60; C furlongs. Diagano fl 3 Leo Colossus 7 9 Courtega .... 8 5 Prince Rono ..7 0 Illuminate ~ SO GowaTilca ... 7 0 Hunting Lodge S 0 Ringside .... 7 0 Superior/ ... 71H Lady Iti ..... 7 0 Headmistress . 7 12 Colossal .... 7 0 Lady Zinnia .. 710 There is plenty of speedy material .in the Waverley Hack Handicap, but some oi the horses may require racing. Diagano is working well and may be favourite. Courtejza will be benefited with her racing at Trentham last month, and Superior and Headmistress are reported to be well forward. Hunting Lodge, Lady Zinnia, L*o Colossus, and Colossal are others with chances on recent efforts. Betting promises to take a fairly even range, but three ; M-ho will probably come in for support are Diagano, Courtega, and Headmistress.
