A ■statement-setting out the present extent of some of the Unemployment Board's minor schemes for unemployment- relief was mado by the Acting Minister-of. Employment (the Hon. J. A.Y-oung)-last evening. Tho following figures.cover. the.4A, 48., and small farm schema from .the date of their inception until August .18,.last: — 4A-scheme (providing farm labour for ■ developmental purposes, whereby the farmer, .finds.part.of. lodging and wages):. .Total .number of married men who have been employed, 15,29S;'wages, £248,541.. . T.o.tai.number of single men employed, 40,254; wages, £299,466. Supervision expenses, £234. Totals, 55,552 men, £547,242. Number of menweeks allocated: Married men, 247, 325; single men, 595,859; t,otal, 83,184. Number of men still employed under scheme, 3391. ' 4B scheme (laud developmental work on contract basis, farmer finding 50 per cent, of cost): Applications approved, 9558; applications cancelled, 995; difference, 8563. Men allocated, 22,407; men withdrawn, 2951; difference, 19,4.56. Subsidies approved, £249,897; subsidies withdrawn, £32,580; difference, £217,317. Contracts .in. operation, 1741; men working, 3762; subsidies ■thereon, £49,098. Contracts not commenced, 1079; men involved, 3334; subsidies involved, £40,744.
