SUCCESSFUL SEASON
HAWERA HORSES' WINNINGS
(Special from "Limited.'')
lIAWERA, This Day
During the racing season just concluded Hawera-trained horses have again won considerable stake money, and have thus upheld the centre's claim to be one of the leading training quarters of the Dominion. Including the amounts won in Australia Hawera horses, with 47 wins and numerous minor placings, have earned over ±18500 in stakes.
Once again Hawera produced winners of !classic races. Mr. G. F. Moore's filly Golden Hair proved the best of her age and sex by winning the V.R.C. Oaks, Great Northern Oaks, and Royal Stakes. Mr. W. Kirkland's Wlienuakura, after winning his lirst four races, including the Avondale and Wellesley Stakes, and being unluckily beaten by Mother Superior in the Welcome Stakes at Ellerslic, unfortunately broke down and could not be further raced. Wlienuakura was a great galloper, and those closely connected with him are convinced that the best of him wa.a not seen.
Golden Hair was the biggest stake winner, accounting for £1005 in the Dominion and £1400 in Australia, making her totai for the Beason £2403. Two good handicap horses in Aga Khan and Carfes wore successful, the former winning the Egniont Cup and the Storey Memorial and Tarnateto Handicaps. Carfex won the Taranaki Cup and ran a memorable race, second to the crack handicapper Jonathan, ill the Foley Memorial Handicap at Avondale, being beaten a length in the record time for the race, 2min 4 l-ssec. Peter Jackson, after running second to Carfcs in- the Taranaki Cup, was taken to Australia, where he ran second in the Australian Cup, and with other placings lie earned over £SOO. Colenso also won in Australia. Diagano, the half-brother to Aga Khan, proved himself a smart hack by winning five races, and others to perform well in this class were Taitoru. St. Clara, and Round Table, the lastnamed registering a. stylish win in the Nolan Cup at Hawera. Oriel also performed well, winning four races. The following is the list of performances:— Stakes. Benedictine, Sandlark, Colenso, and Paparua brings the total amount won to £8795. J. Fryer, with nine wins, heads the list j of winning trainers. O. Cos, including his successes in Australia, won eight races, J. Brown and C. Jackson also scoring a like number. W. Pine scored three wins in the Dominion and one in Australia. G. Richards, W.. Grindlay, T. Fryer, and C. Le Campion were twice successful, and M. Conway and J. Corcoran scored one win each, making a total of 47 wins lor Hawera-trained horses.
Although O.'Cos .and J. Fryer are at present in Australia with teams, plenty of activity is being displayed on the Hawera tracks, for, with Die hunters, over 40 horses nre m active commission. The •prospects of this centre for the new season certainly look most promising.
