The death occurred at Oamaru yestorday of Mr. Ebenezer Piper, aged 78, says a Press Association message. Mr. Piper was born at Letham, Forfarshire, Scotland, and came to New Zealand as » young man. He took up teaching near Oamaru and /it Green Island, being headmaster at Green Island. After retiring ho acted as secretary of the Agricultural and Pastoral Association, the Malay Rubber Company, and the Oamaru Fire Board.

Mr. E. 0. Sheild, of Wellington, who has been awarded the first Bishop Hailfield theosophical scholarship, will leave tomorrow-evening for Auckland to connect with the Rangitane, -which sails for England on Friday. The scholarship is tenable at Queen's College, Oxford, for theosophical study in preparation for ordination as a minister of the. Church of England, and Mr. Sheild will be absent from New Zealand for at least two years..One of the conditions of the scholarship is that each holder must serve five years ia the 'Wellington diocese- if called upon to do so after hi* ordination.
