EXPERIMENTS AT NELSON

Interviewed by a "Mail" representative -today regarding', the use of j Nelson soil for combating • stock ailments, Mr. T. Eigg, director of the Caivtiiron .Institute, said that additional evidence liad been obtained from investigations at the Cawthron Institute that soil plays an. important part in certain cases in the-. maintenance of stock and the health of sheep. An ailment apparently identical with the bush sickness of the North Island has been successfully combated on certain granite soils, of the .-Nelson area by the use of small supplements of soil taken from healthy areas. Where tho tfornml pasturage of sheep lias been supplemented by the administration in drench form of less than half an ounce of healthy Nelson soil twice weekly, perfect health and condition' of sheep had been maintained over a period of two years. Mr. Kigg addod that the exact, role of soil in the prevention of ailment, had not so far been elucidated, but tho success achioved in this experiment suggested that, types of stock ailment and untliriftmes.q were dependent not only on the quality of pasture, but also on the properties of the soils associated wifh them. . .
