ON PRESENT SITE

GOVERNMENT BUILDINGS

NEW WELLINGTON BLOCK

The Stato administrative building programme foreshadowed in tho Budget is one that will be spread over a number of years, according to information from authoritative sources.

As far as the Wellington block is concerned, no problem of sito will arise, since the intention is to utilise the area at present covered by the largo wooden Government Buildings on Lambtoii Quay. It has not yet been decided whether the existing structure is 1 to be demolished and replaced in sections by a modern building or whether it is to be extensively remodelled and added to. Towards thc.ond of the present financial year the whole question will come under review, when the recommendations of the Public Works Department will bo available. In the case of the Auckland administrative- block, tho site question is not likely to be easily disposed of. '. The bulk of the State Departments at present are housed in the Government Buildings in Customs Street West. So far no consideration has been given to the selection- of a site, and the matter will remain in abeyance for some timo. Indications are that there will be some difficulties in the way of an early decision.
