ROAD CYCLING

HARDY COMPETITORS

K. NATTRASS HAS A WIN

Although the Hutt Valley Club's 40-milc open event for Saturday afternoon was postponed, several riders and officials were not aware of the fact, and went out to I'etoue. After an hour's delay it was decided to hold a short race from the Pctone rowing sheds.'to Stokes Valley and back, a distance of lo miles. The race was won by K. Nattrass.

Conditions could not have boon worse, for, while competitors "flew" along with the strong wind at their backs, mutters were extremely difficult on the return journey, us heavy rain and hail tested the ability of the best. Nevertheless, all th.c hardy eight who started completed the course, and, despite a thorough drenching, enjoyed their outing., . 'K. Nattrass and J. Arnold (7mhi) were the limit men, followed two minutes later by C. Aldridge, It. Rose, and R. Taylor. C. Sparkea (3Vsnuu) ; , on his own, was followed by 0. Disley'and W. Lnskey (ser), who will be on the same mark in the 60----mile ev*mt at Hawera on Wednesday. The field remained unchanged on the outward journey,; but on the return-trip Aldridge dropped back. Nattrass, using patent gears, pedalled strongly into the gale to register his initial win, with Arnold lleec aiway second. Taylor outsprinted Rose for third place, but the latter gave numerous splendid laps. Sparkes, the next to finjsh, rode the entire distance unaccompanied, his' ride being full of merit.; . ■In the sprint for time honours Disley just shaded Laskey, with Aldridge close behind completing the field. LasJjcy aiid Disley. although receiving a drenching, appreciated the opportunity of

a ride before their Hawera engagement. Rose, for a junior, rode a good race, and with more assistance from his co-markers, would have caught the leaders. _ Sid Aldridge, always a trier, is a slow beginner, and may come into his own. when the championship and Palmerston races are iWld. ■ ' Messrs. Nattrass, Webbey, Logan, Dutton, and the Robinson brothers were the otficials present. Results:— K. Nattrass (H.V.), 7min, 50 miu SOsec, I; ,T. Arnold (H.V.). 7min. 51 min 3 3-ssec, 2; R.
