UNIVERSITY COLLEGES

CHAMPIONSHIP EVENT

OTAGQ'S SUCCESS

In what were probably the worst conditions encountered for many years, representatives of the University Colleges of .Auckland, Wellington, Canterbury, and Otago met at Lyall Bay on Saturday afternoon fur the first .inter-University crosscountry championship ■ of 10,000 metres. There was a licit! ut"2G; runners, and with I one exception,, a If* completed tho course. Otiigo proved superior in. the teams' seclion, showing good, combination, throughout. The Victoria University team ran its best race ..as a team since the club was inaugurated, and finished a close second. The ■finish, was-a hard-fought" battle be.tween A. G. Bagnall (Victoria) and A. Stewart (Otago), Stewart winning by inches from the local man. • THE RACE. The runners lined up on the beach for the start, but took to the back road as the heavy sea made'the regular course impossible. The "going"' round the coast was a ster.n battle against a gale-force head wind 'and hailstorms, but • the field, led by. A. Stewart.(Otago) and M. O'Cori-. nor (Victoria), maintained a steady pace! At the, bottom of the, Vosseler hill, Stewart was still leading O'Connor, with A Bagnall, (Victoria), L. D. Smith (Canterbury), A. Shannon '(Canterbury), A. Ross (Otago), A. Sutherland (Otago), IT Shooland (Victoria), and H. Jellie (Auck'-' land) all in a handy position and running . strongly. ■ After the climb, and Strathmore Park had been negotiated, Shannon had moved up to first position, and with Stewart and Smith, had established a break on Bagnall, who, . however, soon eloped the. gap. The remainder of the field was beginning-to .fall- into position. Sutherland hadN moved up to fifth position, and Cairns (Victoria), to sixth place. O'Connor-now.filled seventh place,■ follow-ed-'by iShorland. and 11. -Jellie, the first Auckland man. who eventually finished three places higher.up.- ' On the golf links, Bagnall and Stewart were running -strongly and had made a good break on. the rest of the'field. They completed the course running -neck and neck; both making an effort to head' the other. Stewart's final sprint.-was'just sufficient to put him a pace ahead of Bagnall, and enabling-him to' win. It was a most exciting finish. . -, . Results are as follows:1- : A. Stew,art,'(Otago),;42mm 2see ...... 1 A. G. Baguall* (Victoria),42min 3sec ..2 A. T.
