"FINDINGS IGNORED"
PETITIONS TO HOUSE
'A sharp attack on tho Government for failing to take notice of the recommendations of select committees was made by Mr. A. E. Ansell (Government, Chalmers) in the House of Eeprcsontatives yesterday.
Mr. Ansell said that Parliament was the last line of defence for many citizens,, and when committees brought in favourable recommendations, Cabinet Ministers should take tho responsibility i'or. seeing that some notice was taken ijf them. In one caso it was proposed to refer, the recommendation to a committee of civil servants who had no responsibility to the House. He had had Sufficient experience to know that when a committee of civil servants took ctharge of a matter the ordinary citizen liad very littlo chance.
. "I personally object to that principle," said Mr. Ansell. "It may be said that the committees are too sympathetic and give verdicts according to their hearts and not their heads, but the responsibility for considering the recommendations must rest on Cabinet, and it is due that the Ministers should give some explanation."
