HAMMOND'S 302 NOT OUT

The latest series'of county cricket championship match us provided much of tho unexpected, as well as some performances of merit. In making 302 not out for Gloucestershire against Glamor-, gaii, Hammond brought his aggregate fpr tho last seven county matches to 1293, compiled at tho exceptional averago of 258.6 runs per innings. His treble century included, three C's and thirty 4's. Ho batted for 340 minutes. Wth this great contribution, Gloucestershire again realised over 600 runs (for six wickets), Barnett assisting with a century. They were unable, however, to force even a first-innings win, Glamorgan making a tidy score (including a century by E. Davies) for the loss of five wickets.

Sussex's championship prospects wero improved by an outright win, tho Langridge brothers performing to advantage 'with the bat, and Tate bowling well in getting ten wickets- for the mutch.

Although ' Yorkshire disposed .of Leicestershire in tho first innings for 94.runs, last year's champions ultimately, found Smith's bowling so effective that they made only 90 runs in their second innings, after having declared their first innings 'closed with a'load of over 100 runs. Leicestershire gained: a surprise outright win.

Surrey, in a sound position on the first innings, just managed to struggle to a one-wicket win over Middlesex, Fender getting five wickets in each innings and Smith taking eleven wickets all told for Middlesex. Hopwood's bowling, which accounted for thirteen wickets (eight in one innings), contributed'largely to Lancashire's comfortable win over Derbyshire. Marriott (eleven wickets) assisted Kent to a big will over Nottinghamshire. Among other bowling performances of note was that of Eastman (Essex) in, taking four wicketß for no runs in an innings.

The results were:—

Surrey v. Middlesex, at the Oval. — Middlesex 184 (Fender fiye for 84s and 292, (Price 87, Fender five for 94); Surrey 359 (Gregory 121; Smith six for 98) and 118 for nine wickets (Allen four for 42, Smith five for 58). Surrey won by one wicket.

Somerset v. Essex, at Weston-Super-Maro.—Somerset 60 (Eastman 'four for none, Fames four for 35) and 111; Essex 126 (Hazel! seven for 77) and 46 for no wickets. Esses won by ten wickets.

Lancashire v. Derbyshire, at Manchester.—Lancashire 240 (Eckersloy 89) and 202 for five wickets, declared (Tyldesley 87 not out); Derbyshire 170 (Hopwood live for 32) and 137 (Hopwod eight for 58). .Lancashire won by 235 runs.

Northamptonshire. ,■ >v. Hampshire at Kettering.—Northamptonshire 146 (Kennedy five for'4B) and 205; Hampshire 293 (Moore SI, Partridge fivt for 77) and 59 for no wickets. Hampshire won by ton wickets.

Kent v. Nottinghamshire, at Canterbury.—Kent 445 for six wickets, doelared (Woolley 101, Ames 99); Nottinghamshire 116 (Froernan five for 62, Marriott four for 27) and 175 (Marriott seven for 5(5). Kent won by an innings and 154 runs. :

Gloucestcshire v. Glamorgan, at Bristol.—Gloucestershire 603 for six wickets, declared (Barnett 123, Hammond 302! not out); Glamorgan 324 for h've wickets (E. Dayies 127, Turubull 97). Match drawn.

Leicestershire v. Yorkshire, at Leicester.—Leicestershire 94 (Bowes four for 17, Smailea four for 30) and 250 (Armstrong 98 not out); Yorkshire 196 for fivo wickets,, declared (Leyland 90) and 90 (Smith six for 39). Leicestershire won by 58 runs. ,

Sussex v. Worcestershire, at Hastings.—Susses 417 (Cook 97, James Langridgc 149 not' out) and 203 for' two wickets, declared (John Langridge 86 not out); Worcestershire 194 (Tate tour for 47) and 157 (Tato six for 44). Sussex won by 269 runs.
