NO, 5 WORKS

AUCKLAND PROPOSAL

COMPLETION AT STANDARD RATES

(By Telegraph—Press Association.)

AUCKLAND, This .Day

The Auckland City Council's proposal to complete all its No. 5 schemes as subsidised jobs, paying the men standard wages for tho time worked, is to bo considered at tho next, meeting of tho Unemployment Board, said the Mayor (Mr. Hutchison) on his return today from 'Wellington. . He had arranged with the Unemployment Board for a satisfactory rate of subsidy, but to1 finalise tho scheme it would be necessary to ask the ratepayers to sanction a loan. This, ho felt confident, would bo in their intorosts. Tho men most suitable for tho jobs would be solected from those at present working, and when sufficient had been selected for the council's scheme, about 700 out of 1500 whom tho council was now employing, would bo placed on sustenance. As tho efficiency of the relief workers was not nearly so high now as when tho schemes were started, a better return would bo obtained by completing tlio works under the standard wages plan than under relief conditions.
