EXPORT POSSIBILITIES
The United .Kingdom imports thirteen million great hundreds (120) of eggs in shell every year. Of these Now Zealand sends a very small percentage. For nine months of 1933-34, about 37,400 great hundreds arrived from this country, yet foreign imports totalled just under 'nine millions. Apart from Denmark. Australia sent Home the greatest number .from, any country last year. Whilst we hear .so much of quotas, it seems.. a great pity that inpro of our eggs are not exported,; even if the actual return to the producer is somewhat lower than local glut prices. The export of some of these eggs would greatly help to produce a higher local rate, and it seems that some national movement is urgently required. Unfortunately, th'o' fact -that poultrymen are forced to'pay such a high price for their grain greatly hinders any serious expansion of the local industry, but it seems reasonable to assume that some solution will bo forthcoming within the noxt few years. It must bo remembered that we can export for only three months in the year, and if production is increased . especially for export, there will be more eggs on the market during the remaining nino months of the year. - All producers should-urge their egg agents to assist i" getting away as ninny eggs as possible, and this can bo done by sending in only first-grade, perfectly clean, fresh eggs. Those who pass our export eggs, nre very strict in their grading regulations, and since most eggs must travel some distance before they are graded, special care must be used to pack" only in clean fillers. ; . •
