THIRTEEN MEN ARRESTED

FINES TOTAL £146

As a result of a raid carried out by tho police, under Sergeant W. o'Donnull, in Taranaki Street at about 3 p.m. yesterday, thirteen men appeared in tho Magistrate's Court today ■on charges in connection with pakapob playing. Fines totalling £146 10s were imposed by Mr. E. Page, S.M.

Joe Sing, aged 23, and Ah Ngan Yuk, aged -41, wero each fined. £50 on charges of using premises as common gaming-houses, and'for a similar offence Jim Tow, aged 50, was fined £40. The threo defendants, who pleaded guilty to the charges,-were stated to have'been before tho Court previously. In Tow's case eighteen years have elapsed since his previous conviction. . Yung Wong, aged. 49, who pleaded not-guilty, was charged with assisting in |tho .management of a common gaming-house, but tho Magistrate, after hearing tho evidence, said that tho cbargo had not been proved.l Worig admitted a charge of being found without lawful excuse in a common gaming-house, and he was fined 10s. On similar charges the following were also finod 10s: Fred Muneey, a carpenter, aged 25; Harry Gill, a cook, .aged 52; Charles Henry Hogg/ a baker, aged 42; John Orley, a seaman, aged 49; Merviu John Eankin, a waterside worker, aged 24; William ■Doyle, a motor-driver, aged 43; Walter Foley, nged 57; and Ah Chick, a cook, aged.sl. Charles Applebee, a labourer, aged 26, who was stated to have been bofore tho Court previously on a similar charge, was fined.£2.

Mr. G. N. Armstrong represented tho four Chinese who appeared on the major charges. Sing, Yuk, and Tow, ho said, wero only in a small way of business and were endeavpuriug; to eke out a livelihood. Ho pleaded"' for leniency for them. .' ,■ .

Tho Magistrate) Stated that all three had had previous convictions, Sing in respect of opium and tho other two in connection with gaming-houses. He fixed default at two months' imprisonment. In Wong's case tho Magistrate dismissed the major charge without calling on tho defence. ,
