SEAMEN SAILING
ACTION AT GREYMOUTH
CAMPAIGN.. FOE BETTER CONDITIONS
(By Telegraph—Press Association.)
GREYMOUTH, August 9,
Four of the five vessels held up here by the seamen's dispute sailed tonight —the Kata at 9 p.m. for Wcstport, the Poolta at 9.30 p.m. for New Plymouth, the Kaimai at 10 p.m. for Wellington, and the Titoki at 11 p.m. for Nelson. Tho fifth vessel, tho Kaimiro, loaded with a million feet of white pine for Melbourne, has to await a deeper bar, which may prevail tomorrow from a change of wind to the north, otherwise some of her cargo will probably require unloading.
The 70 seamen sentenced here on Tuesday spent only about a day at Paparua Prison, and returned overland to Greymouth by this afternoon 'b express, rejoining their ships at 8 p.m. The Titoki's crew tonight signed new articles. The seamen were met on arrival at the station by a large crowd, while the Watersiders' Union marched to the station, but the seamen did not march today as they did when going to prison.
Officials of the Seamen's Union, Messrs. F. P. Walsh, president, Clarke .(Dunedin), and Martin (Lyttelton), arrived today and proceeded to Westport, where they will endeavour to induce 100 seamen there to take their vessels to sea. A decision in the matter is unlikely until noon tomorrow.
A meeting hold hero tonight of representatives of miners', watersiders', timber workers', and other organisations decided to form a council of action to conduct a national campaign for the restoration of wage cuts and conditions by moans of rank and file action as distinct from a lead by union executives. A resolution was carried as follows: "This meeting congratulates tho seamen on the stand taken, hero and at Westport, and. on the able manner in which they conducted themselvos during J,hc stoppage. Further, it is tho belief of all unions hero represented that a fight had to be put up as soon as possible demanding the restoration of .the wage cuts and working conditions, and tho seamen are assured of tho wholehearted support of our unions at'any later date."
