GERMANS IN MEMEL
WHOLESALE DISMISSALS
A VIGOROUS CAMPAIGN'
MEMEL, August 1.
Since July 11, eighty-three German officials in the Department of Justico have been dismissed; and the mandatos of eight Gorman members of the Memol Parliament, including the President, have been withdrawn. .
It is expected that the next stop will bo the dissolution of municipal administrations, which will mean the dismissal of 700 German minor officials. Of 400 Memel-landers in the Lithuanian railways, post and Customs services, 175 have been discharged on the ground that they cannot speak tho Lithuanian language.
Tho, Memel territory,"" with an ~ area of 943 square miles, which was detached from Germany by the Treaty o£ Versailles, was handod over to Lithuania in February, 1923. Under the Memcl Convention, between Lithuania on tho one side, and Britain, France, Italy, and Japan on the other, Memel constitutes a unit under the sovereignty of Lithuania, but with a large measure of local autonomy. The Nazis are agitating for the recession of Mrmol to Germany, and have complained to the four Powers which signed the convention regarding the trcf>*ment of Germans by the controlling authorities.
