THE BIGGER BARRIER

(To the Editor.)

Sir, —We havo read recently of the alarm that has been caused New Zealand manufacturers by certain changes made in tho tariff, but I venture to suggest to these gentlemen that there is no ground for their fears. As the New Zealand representative of a certain English manufacturing house I called this morning on a large retailer locally and was informed by tho principal that his firm had decided not to do any more buying in England, confining its purchases to Australasian houses. On inquiring the cause for this 'change'ho.'replied with one word, "exchange." He stated that any alteration in the tariff did not affect the position at all; it was the exchange that was killing business with England. .

It will be very.surprising indeed if we are not faced with very mncl^ larger surplus London funds at the end'of th(3 next financial year. Australian manufacturers are certain to do a much larper business with New Zealand than hitherto.—l am, etc.;
