THE GRAND NATIONALS

FIRST DAY'S ACCEPTANCES

NO SURPRISE DEFECTIONS

A splemjid list of acceptances has been received for the Grand Nationals, Winter Cup, and first-day minor events at the Canterbury Jockey Club's Grand National Meeting next Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday, and the club should enjoy ouo of the most successful meetings it haa experienced for several years. In one event at- least, the Avonheud Handicap, a division seems unavoidable, as the 33 acceptors are nine over the safety mark for seven furlongs on the track; and the Winter Cup field of 27 is also one above, tho safety mark for a mile, though it is possible that a division will finally not bo required in this race. The only two races on the first day in which tho acceptance is less than last year arc the Trial Hurdles, 10 us ugcmst 15, and the Enfield Steeples, 8 (it. against IU, but this year's field should provide equally as good contests as last year's, lv most of the other races the fields ure greatly in advance of- last year's acceptarioo strength. The L Grand National Steeples card of eleven is two better than twelve months ago, the Winter Cup field of twenty-seven is eight better, and tho Grand National Hurdles acceptance of nineteen is seven better. . It may be said that there is no surprise defection in any of the principal races. The only non-acceptor who might have been in the Winter Cup is Silver Streak, not because of any recent form ho has shown but because it had been announced that the leading jockey L J. Ellis would be riding him, Every other defection was anticipated. • Tho on!; acceptors claiming double engagements on tho first day are Blacksmith and Revision, and the fields generally are now no easier in appearance than they were after the first payments. A« is commonly known the C.J.G. will bo operating on the wiu-and-place system of betting next week, and the place machine in particular should be well patronised, for eucb dividends are certain to be excellent.
