COLD WEATHER
BUT SLOWLY IMPROVING
Moderate to strong southerly to south-easterly winds are forecasted to prevail about and to tho north of Cook Strait, but these will gradually decrease in force. Elsewhere winds from the same direction will be light to moderate. Although some showers are still probable along the East Coast and in the far north of tho North Island, the weather as a whole should be fair to fine. Temperatures will continue cold, and many hard frosts aro likely tonight.
Pressure is still rather low to tho north and north-east of the Dominion, but it is rising generally, and this morning a slight anticyclone area was situated to the east of the South Island. Except in western districts of the South Island where the weather has been fine, unsettled and changcablo weather has prevailed with very cold temperatures. Occasional showers have accompanied moderate to strong southerly winds, and heavy rain has fallen in the Hawke's Bay and Gisbnrno areas. Snow has fallen on the ranges, and in somo places in tho South Island lower lovels also received a coating of snow. Auckland had a cold southerly wind yesterday. Although the weather was dull and threatening, no rain fell. Tho weather this morning was fair with an easterly breeze. Calm and pleasant weather prevailed in Wollington early yesterday morning, but at 9 a.m. a southerly set in and tho rest of the day was bitterly cold. Lato in tho afternoon and evening there were occasional showers, with sleet at times, oight points of rain being recorded at Kelburn and 25 in Lower Hutt. This morning's weather wag still unsettled with a cold southeasterly "wind. . Christchurch had a cold and dull day with a light southerly wind. A traeo of rain fell about 2 p.m. and snow tell on the Port Hills last night. The weather this morning was still overcast with a light southerly wind. Dunedin's weather was unsettled, and a afresh south-westerly wind was accompanied by rain and snow showers in the morning. Thero was scmo improvement in the weather in tho late afternoon, and after a frosty night this, morning broke calm and clear.
