SILVER RING AND NIGHTLY
Silver Ring and Nightly, regarded as the two best horses in New Zealand, luive been backed to win the Caullield and Melbourne Cups for a largo sum, writes -C'iii-digan" in the Melbourne "Herald." It is understood that the move in favour of the Dominion horses is authoritative, hi addition to being coupled i'ov the two Cups, Nightly was backed straight out for the Melbourne Cup, and Silver Ring was bracketed also with Peter Pan.
The commissioner was a well-known backer closely associated with many New Zoahmders, and his outlay was large; in fact, move than has been expended on any doubles so far taken for the important spring events. 'J.he presence of Silver Ring and Nightly at Ciuilficld and Flcmington will add additional interest to the Victorian meetings, says the writer, as since Nightmarch won the Melbourne Cup, Victoria has not seen the best New Zealand horses.
Silver Ring and Nightly have both been weighted right up to their best homo form, but there in little doubt that they are good horses. The former has yet to show he can run a mile aiid a half in good company under heavy weights, but he is a brilliant sprinter. and his trainer (R. W. King), who brought Pilliewinkie to Australia, knows, what is required of a Caulfieid Cup horse. '
F. V. Jones, of Limerick' and Ballymena fame, trains Nightly, and he also knows what is needed- to win rich races in Australia. , He should have a. good line through his good horses in the past, and if Nightly carries his confidence then he has a Cup chance.. . In the past Nightly has been hard to train, but the genuine support for liiin means that it can be taken, for granted that he is now sound. Jones is much too shrewd to throw money away it' there was; ii doubt about the -Night Raid horse standing a preparation.
