IN THE COUNCIL
"LIKE ALICE IN WONDERLAND"
When the Bill came before the Legislative Council, the Hon. C. J. Carrington said that the statement made by the Leader of the Council (the Hon. B. MRsters) in explanation of the measure sounded like a story from "Alice in Wonderland." There was urgent need in New Zealand for stricter laws concerning company promotion, just as there was urgent necessity for retrospective legislation concerning certain persons who had become suddenly rich, and he hoped that the Government would go further than the present legislation. He congratulated the Government on tho legislation and on getting the co-operation of the Australian Governments.
The Hon. D. Buddo said that the public would demand that the matter be probed to the bottom. The Hon. T. Bloodworth said that the operations of certain companios in Auckland had been disturbing many people for some time past, and he welcomed the investigation. To a large extent the smaller investor was the loser by the operations of such companies. The Bill was passed.
