Towards the close of the month of May and the beginning of June a very curioua- sight may be witnessed at Toluo. There ono may see suspended under the verandahs of houses beautiful little cages of bamboo, from which break upon tho ear strange little metallic whistlings of light trills, which fill the air with delicate music. Theso musical sounds are emitted by certain insects. Listening to these minute singers lias • been for many centuries a favourite pastime of tho Japanese. The most prized of these- singing insectsis the simiinusM. Its name means "insect bell," and the sound which it emits resembles that of a tiny eilvor bell It is a- small black beetlo, with a flat body.

Miss Stella Murray, the Christehurch contralto, has been askod to take part in the 8.8.0. Empire broadcast for New Zealand on August 18, and will siug some simple and popular ballads. Miss Murray is nn stranger to British listeners, but has not taken part previously in. f, long-distance programing.
