NATIONAL MEETING
TRENTHANTS CANDIDATES
AUTOPAY TO RUN IN CUP
(By "Kangatira.")
Trontliam stables will have only five representatives at the C.J.C. National Meeting next week. Two of these, Palm and Ecd Sun, are already in the south, having raced at tho Hunt Meeting last Saturday. Chile was to have gone down on tonight's ferry, and the other pair, Autopay and Vitaphone, are booked.to leave tomorrow night.
Autopay is now definitely to start in tlio Winter Cup in preference to the Paparua Handicap. His owners liad intended to run him in the sprint with L. G. Morris as his pilot, but they did not expect quito so much weight as 10.S (lived through, his Cup weight, 9.11). No rider has as yet actually been engaged for tho Cup, but negotiations iu-o in progress. The Trentham horseman G. Bidgway is accompanying tho horse's trainer E. Simpson south to assist in looking after him. Autopay has continued to improve during tho last week, and, although tho tracks were closed for fast work this morning owing to their sodden condition, permission was obtained to give him a final gallop later on during the day. The Jficcarton inilo might prove just a shade too far for him first time up, but it is. expected that he will nevertheless go a good race, with quito an outside chance of succeeding. « Chilo has been, taken south by his owner-trainer J. O 'Meara, and he has left in better condition than ho has ever previously held. Before leaving ho was sent over eight schooling fences with P. Burgess in the saddle, and, after screwing at tho first two, ho settled down to give a most satisfactory exhibition of jumping. Ho is another Limond hurdler who may not bo long in joining the list of winners in this department. In the Jumpers ' Flat on tho first day Burgess will not be available to rido him, as this horseman has been booked through tho meeting for Invietus, and it is possible that G t Kidgway will have the ride, but on the later days Burgess will be in his saddle.
Vitaphono was disappointing in a trial with Chilo at the weekend, but the cause was discovered this morning, for when his owner-trainer 11... L. Kingan went to take him down to tho track he found him soro and investigation re,'vcalca that, he had a bruised off fore heel. Kingan had him treated at/once, and it is still hoped that ho may bo all right again before Tuesday. His departure south may now-bo delayed till Saturday night.
