KILLED BY SMUGGLERS

It is believed that tho vigilance of a young English official of the Chinese Maritime Customs was responsible for his death at the hands of smugglers in tho Hainan area of Southern China. The official, Mr. Edgar Reginald Collier, aged 29, son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Collior, of Whiteley Village, near Walton-on-Thames, was shot dead and five others were injured in a hand-to-hand fight with tho smugglers. Mr. Collier had recently returned to- the East after spending his leave in England, and hi his last letter to Ms parents, wrote: "I have just brought off si, good seizure of smuggled goods to the value of £1000." That capture apparently resulted in the smugglers deciding to end his activities.
