Atcorcling to reports sent to tb& Government of Tunis by m-ehacologists, Carthage, the great rival of ancient Rome, is being steadily destroyed, llie ruins of the famous city have long been regarded by the people of the neighbourhood as a convenient stone quarry, and stones bearing most interesting inscriptions have been built into dwellinghouses or used for linings of wells. In warning tho French Government that unless drastic action is taken Carthage will soon bo nothing but a name, a distinguished French archaeologist stated that columns and capitals of old buildings only recently brought to light have been carried off' by thieves. Besides that there have been acts of: wanton destruction, such as tlie smashing of columns and tho disfigurement of historic pieces of masonry.
