SETTLER AND HIS WIFE

HOMESTEAD TRAGEDY

(By Telegraph.—Press Association;) TE AWAMTJTU, This Day. An old homestead on Jary's Road, which- branches off .'the Main South Road four miles north of Te Awamutu, was. the scene of a terrible tragedy at about 4 o'clock this v mbrhing. ; Mr. and Mrs. Frank Jary,, well-known and popular settlers, were burned to death •when their house was destroyed by fire. The inmates at the time included the parents ■ and ■-.■their three adult daughters.

. The alarm, was raised by on© of the daughters, who was awakened by the collapse of her bed. Her room, was then ablaze, and she was just in time to rouso her two sisters. It was impossible to approach the room occupied by the parents. ' ■ ■ "

Further particulars show that a daughter, Nellie/aged IS), was awakened and discovered that the bedclothes were alight; She was sleeping in the second bedroom'with, a sister aged 8. Nellie immediately put her sister out of the window, raised the alarm, and scrambled out- herself. l

Another sister, Norbusy, aged 16, was sleeping in a third bedroom. She scrambled out' of a window, but there was no sign of the parents. . The /girls could save nothing, so ran to a neighbour's, Mr. Alfred Roberts, a quarter of a mile away, for help. i

Mr. Eoborts and other men. ran over, but tlio house was completely enveloped, so ■he telephoned the Te Awamutu police-, and 'Constable Forsyth motored out, reaching there at 5 o'clock. The roof and walls had collapsed, but the fire was still raging. The bodies jvere seen, but could not bo recovered. ( Later, Constables Forsyth and Eimmer recovered the remains, the bodies being terribly burned and unreeogibisablc. An inquest was opened by the Co'ronciy Mr. Emson.

Prank Jary was born in * Norfolk, England, and came to the Dominion 28 years ago.

He married Agues ■ Maxwell, of Bunnythorpo, at Pdlmerstqn North, and came tb: the district nineteen years ago. Both husband and wife were greatly respected. They were a fine type of settler., They.leave four daughters, one recently married. 4- brother,! Herbert Jary, resides at Claudelands. Mr. Jary was aged 52 and Ms/wifo was 48. One daughter was tilled by a tractor overturning while kssisting on tlio same farm three years ago. ■•
