NO RESPONSE TO CALLS
CREWS AT WESTPORT

WESTPOKT, August 6. The crews of the Union Company* vessels Karetu, Kiwitea, and Karma, the Anchor Company's Alexander, an 4 tho Westport Coal Company's Canopus, held a combined meeting yesterday. After a lengthy discussion- it was de» cided not to take the ships to se* until further advice was. received from headquarters at Wellington. Tho Canopus: has been held up by bad weather since Friday, but the crew are implicated in the'hold-up, and refused later calls. The Karotu and Karma were ready to sail this evening, but as a result of a meeting their crews did not respond to calls: Th» Kiwitea has been ready since Satur* day, but her crew likewise would: nbtj take her out. The Alexander's proposed departuro. yesterday was simi* larly held up. ■'■■' : ■ In addition; to these five tramp steamers, the Fiscus, the, Government steamer Matai, and the auxiliary semv Fairburn, the latter awaiting repairs, are in port, but aro not affected by; the hold-up.
VESSELS SAIL
A largely attended meeting of the Wellington' Seamen's Union was held this morning. Though nothing .was released for publication'the decision, must have favoured resumption Of work, as the Union Company's steamer Waimarino, which was delayed from sailnvg yesterday owing to the crew's desi.ro to attend today's meeting! got away today, and the Fa.rera, which has been held up since Friday by a shortage of crew, was timed to sail at 4 p.m. The position in Greymouth willlx* clarified this afternoon, where "the cases of the seamen who were.sentenced to a month's imprisonnxeiLt recently; will be finally- dealt with. ' ■
