EPIDEMIC AMONG HORSES
South Africa has on several occasions been required to deal with serious situations in regard to diseases among horses, and, judging from accounts to hand, the country is once again being severely scourged. Horse sickness broke out during the summer season, and practically all quarters of the Union were affected. The deathroll in Xatal alone was estimated at 1000, and over 200 head of thoroughbred slock perished in the Natal Midlands, apart from hundreds in other districts. Altogether, it is stated, the epidemic may be regaided as one of the worst of its character that ha» ibeen known iv South Africa. The loss ot stud horses has been so serious that the country -will have to import largely in order to keep up the standard of stock.
