Playing a game far below Hie standard which they produced in other contests thiß season, Ponekc went down to Wellington at the Prince of Wales Park on S-ittturday to the tune of 15 points to 3. Poneke raised the .first score when.1 Smith, connecting well with Russell, got across well out. Calcinai failed to convert. Poneke werasbou'back again with a solid oftensivo, but Wellington cleared after a spell and Pryde went close to scoring. Within a few minutes. Wellington had again gone close to' scoring, but Miller fajtad to make the: best of an opening. ■ Continued attack by 'Wellington brought its iward when, from a loose forward move, Carlyon slipped over the Poneke line and scored. :Tke'kick failed. At half-time the score was Poneke 3, Wellington 3. With the wind behind them in the second spell: Wellington- made the pace hot for their adversaries. Poneke were attempting to keep the ball tight, but Wellington were- playing a more open game. From" a scrum=in Poneke territory Miller worked the blind sido and sent Ball away to score a fine try. The kick failed. -It was' not long before Wellington wore again hammering away on the Poneke hue. Carlyon. and Pryde scored tries-, in quick succession, both being unconverted, i'oneke's game had now become ragged, and further points were added to the Wellington total when Ball gained a try which was also unconverted. Wellington continued to hold the upper hand during the remainder'of the game and the final whistle went -with the. score: Wellington 15, Poneke 3. ' ■ •■ Mr. G. Jenkins was the referee.
