AUSTRALIAN ONION TRADE.
In 'a report presented to the Australian House of Representatives, the Tariff Board has rejected a proposal that the rate of duty on onions should be reduced. The board found that, despite the existing duty, of £8 a ton and other inevitable landing charges, 3150 tons of onious were imported from countries other than New Zealand in the year ended June, 1933, most of them coming from Japan and the United States.
The board stated that, although prices of Australian onions might be high in seasons \\!hen the supply was short, there was no likelihood of an onion famine. An average price of £7 a. ton was not unreasonable. The board pointed out, however, that the industry in Australia was inadequately organised, and that an effort should be made by growers to regulate the area under production, particularly $s the profitable market was limited,
