A COLD CHANGE

BUT WEATHER IMPROVING

The official weather forecast .issued at noon today states that strong southerly winds, which in places will reach gale force, can still be expected, but they, should decrease in force tonight. The weather in western districts of the South Island should be fine, but elsewhere it will continue to be changeable with passing showers and. hail in places. A gradual improvement, however, may be expected to take place. Temperatures will be very cold, and many hard frosts are likely- to be recorded tonight in.the South Island. Tho depression which has caused the recent unpleasant weather is now located to the east of -the Dominion, and an anticyclone is approaching across the Tasman Sea. Last night tho southerly wind, which yesterday was prevailing as far north as Cook Strait, became general over the. whole Dominion and increased in force. Rain was general, and conditions became ■boisterous during the night, with heaw rain and hail. Snow fell oh the high country. By this morning an improvement was in evidence in the western districts of the South Island, but elsewhere the weather was still co!d and unsettled with a strong and squally southerly wind. ■ A strong westerly wind prevailed in Auckland yesterday. Frequent showers fell during last night, when the weather was very boisterous, the wind having backod to the south. At £> a.m. today a fresh southerly was blowing, and the weather was fair with passing cloud, but very cold. Wellington had dull and cool weather with a light southerly wind. Drizzling rain fell in the afternoon and evening, but dnring the night, when, the southerly became strong and squally, there were heavy showers of rain and hail. The total rainfall at Kelbnrn measured 119 points, 80 points falling in Lower Hutt. The weather was' still squally and changeable this morning, with a strong southerly -wind. Christchurch had cold and unsettled weather with intermittent rain all day. A south-westerly wind increased in force, and during the night there were some heavy showers and hail and snow squalls. The rainfall totalled 45 points. At 9 a.m. today it was still raining, with a strong south-westerly wind. Dunedin had-; cold and showery weather with a south-westerly breeze. Some snow fell ok the surrounding hills last night, but this morning's weather was fair to cloudy, a south-westerly wind still being in evidence.
