B CLASS WORKERS
A STATEMENT DENIED
A Pi-ess Association message published yesterday stated that a member Of the Christehurch Citizens' Unemployment Committee had said he felt that Mr.'-'W: Bromley, ""deputy chairman of tho" Unemployment 'Board, had "sold the committee a pup" in assuring them that some ararngement was to be made with hospital boards to assist B class workers.
"As far as I gathered when I left "the Christehurch committee, there were no misunderstandings," ■said Mr. Bromley in a statement today.' ■ ' 'X had; pointed out that the board's attitude was that it was unwise to fix the;sustenaiice rate without work for the cities •at a higher figure than the present rate because of its nearness to the country wages, and I went on to suggest that if, in the case of B2 men, which were borderline cases between the hospital boards and tho Unemployment Board, there were any men in specially necessitous circumstances, then it was a matter in which the. "hospital boards might well;: consider rendering further assistance.
"I also suggested that some conversations had already taken place with the Minister of Health (the Hon. J. A. Young) on these lines, but I made no promises as to what action the hospital boards would take, as, quit© obviously, I am not in a position to do so. As evidence of the nature of some of the borderline cases, I need only mention that at least ono of the workers so classed in jChristchureh goes to his No. 5 scheme work on crutches."
