MINE MANAGERS SCARCE
Members of the Victorian Chamber of Mines told the Minister of Mines (Mr. Jones) on July 3 that properly-qualified mine managers were, so difficult to obtain in Victoria; that the revival in gold mining was being seriously hindered. They requested the introduction of a Bill amending the Mines Act to make the granting of certificates to mining managers temporarily easier.^
The president of the Chamber of Mines (Mr. A. H. Merrin) said that certificates werarequired for mines employing twelve men or more underground. During the depression there was-:no .inducement to men to qualify for the certificate, but, with the revival of the industry, companies were faced with a serious dearth of certificated managers. If the provisions, of the Act were enforced it would be impossible for the industry to expand, and, in some cases, for; present activities to continue. . The chamber proposed that the Board of Examiners for mining managers should be empowered to grant permits to managers for a limited period after proof had been furnished of experience. '
Mr. Jones promised to submit the matter to the Cabinet.
