SNOW IN CANTERBURY
THREAT TO STOCK

CHHISTCHURCH, July 16,
A heavy southerly storm broke over Canterbury today, with heavy rain on the plains and snow on tho higher levels inland. In Christchureh there has been steady rain with occasional sleet showers.
On. Banks Peninsula there was some snow on the hilltops, but elsewhere there was heavy rain.
Tho snowfall this afternoon occurred on most of the inland areas of Canterbury "and lasted about four hours.. The heaviest fall was near Waiau, where snow still lay on the ground unmelted after the snowstorm of about ten days ago. . . -.
At Wandleholm, between Waiau and Kaikoura, four inches of snow fell today and snow was falling steadily tonight. At Methven two inches lay on the ground. In most parts the fall lasted four hours.
This evening the'snow was followed by rain, generally very heavy. So far no damage has been reported, but if the snow continues in tho Waiau area there may bo losses of stock.
1 The storm, with a very cold wind, follows a period of almost a week of north-west conditions, with spring-like temperatures.
