The premium on gold has stimulated immensely the placer mining industry of the Yukon, and British Columbia and many properties are being operated which conld not be worked successfully when the metal sold at the standard price of gold-standard days. In one Yukon mino operations were hampered by frost in the gold-bearinw gravel, and could not be undertaken on a profitable basis using regular thawing methods. Tho. Klondike Elver ran nearby, and a largo part of it was turned into a now channel which caused tho water to flow over the mine. It is estimated that in two or three years the water will have abstracted the frost, when tho stream, will be turned back to its original course and mining will proceed.

At one time the Yukon was the leading gold-producing area in Canada, but now it ranks below Ontario, Quebec British, Columbia^ and Manitoba,
