A TAX ON A TAX

(To the Editor.)

Sir, —Being a hard-working man, and trying to save a little money for my old age, I have, at times, in the past invested in a few Government bonds, which, although returning a low rate of interest, wore looked upon as being gilt-edged and safe under previous Governments. However, this Government, as you know, has made a financial raid on the thrifty. It cut-down the interest on my bonds to the extent of £40 per annum by stamp duty two years ago, and now, to cap it all, I have just received a demand from tho Unemployment Board to pay unemployment tax on that £40, which I never received, together with an extra penalty tax of 10 per cent. I think that this out-Herods Herod. How long are wo citizens of New Zealand going to put up with this sort of. thing?—l am, etc., ,

SUFFERING TAXPAYER,
