FREE AMBULANCE

PAST MONTH'S SERVICE

A meeting of theVWellington District Free Ambulance Board was held today. ICr. D. J. MeGowan presided.

The superintendent (Mr. J\- Roffe) reported that 713 cases had been attended by the ambulance in May. Of these 579 had been jn the city and suburbs. A total of 6377 miles had been travelled by the ambulances. The total number of cases attended to May 31 had been 46,002, and the ambulances had travelled 455,199 miles. During May 182 hours of duty had been served by the honorary staff. .

Mr. Boffe said that he had attended the annual meeting of the Palnierston North Free Ambulance which, he stated, now seemed to be getting on its feet. Opposition was still being, experienced from the hospital, but ho thought that that would die out. .

The cost of each case the Wellington Free Ambulance handled, he continued, was 9s 4d, which compared more than favourably with the London County Council's average cost of 22s 4d. The inclusive running costs pf the cars during the past twelve months had worked out at 11 2-3tt.

The Chairman: Thero has certainly ljeen no waste. The service is running very economically; it seems very satisfactory.

It was announced that the annual meeting of the board ,would lie held, on July 2.

The chairman stated that a framed photograph of the ladies' auxiliary committee would bo presented to the board at the annual meeting and would be hung in the board room. It was decided to call for photographs of board members in order to have them framed.
