REPAIRING AND PAINTING

Among the. odd, jobs in the garden which can,, and should, be dealt Kith at this season is the renovating of arches and pergolas, which soon get the worse ; for wear if neglected.- Those constructed of wood should have all necessary repairs attended to. •

If necessary, roser or creepers should be temporarily drawn away to allow of the work being done. Where the posts have rotted at the bottom a simple method of repair is to put in; a short post of jarrah or other wood which will stand well in the ground. This should be; placed close, up to the original post, from 2 to 3 feet in the ground and- from 1 to 2 feet above. The two may then be fastened together with ordinary fencing ■ wire drawn tight and fastened with staples, or they may be bolted, together. In the case of iron or wire erections the opportunity should be taken to Rive them a couple of coats of paint. The climbers should not be replaced until the paint is thoroughly dry. When replacing the growths endeavour to space them as evenly as possible and if there are more than, enough :to furnish the . arch -or pergola comfortably cut out the oldest or weakest. See that all the branches are adequately tied in so that they will not be damaged by winter storms^.
