CLOSE GAMES
RECENT CONTESTS
GOOD FORM SHOWN
Unexpectedly, the closest game at Hataitai on Saturday was between the Wellington East Old Girls' first and second, teams. It was expected that Wellington East 1 wquld have no difficutly in defeating the second team, but from the start East 2 showed they were determined to fight for every point, and play throughout was fast and willing. Where the East 1 team gained their advantage was in their ability to ■carry through a bigger percentage of attacking movements. Their stronger scoring third was the deciding factor,, centres and defence thirds being about 'even in strength. The half-time score of 7-6 in favour of the, first team gives a fair idea of the general evenness' of play, and the final score 16-13 shows how closely the game was contested. Miss Armstrong refereed. Wesley found it no difficult task to defeat Technical Old Girls, winning by 15 goals to 4.'. Once again, Technical lost chance after chance through too forceful passing, particularly from defence to centre, when, inability to hold the hard-thrown ball gave Wesley innumerable opportunities to gain, .possession and attack. Individually,' the Technical players are strong, but as they absolutely fail to make their combined work foreettiul enough trate the opposing defence, lose, game after game. Hesitancy in knowing, where to pass the ball, loses valuable time for them. Wesley played a bet-, ter passing game on Saturday, and showed :their best form to date. U. Ussher was reliable in centre. . Although beaten by 15 goals to 10, Kia Toa made University work hard for every point. " University's- display was far from that usually shown by the team. C. Turner, last year'one of Wellington's best defenders, was hesitant in getting into position,, and Kia Toa often caught her badly out of position. She was, however, responsible for some brilliant interceptions. Kia Toa's. whole team played well, but did not direct their passes to gain the best territorial advantage. Miss Armstrong controlled the game. The Kia Ora-Furlor game provided some good side-passing, 'both teams mencement, Kia Ora gained possession ma kept the ball for some time but repeatedly all three forwards missed, in shooting. Midway through the first spell, the Kia Of a forwards improved their shooting but the Furlor forwards were not able Vto strike form. Halftime came wiijh the score:'Kia Ora 10, Fuflor 4. After recommencing, Kia Ora improved and ran out the winners by 25 goals to 9. j Eurlor's defenders put up good opposition. .Time after time,, K. Norris cleared from under the goal. Good passing l|y Furlor failed in the goal third, whe^e Kia Ora's "strong de-' fence, intercepted. Mrs Granger , refereed. . I ':.-.
