HERE AND THERE

I, Eastbourne League of Mothers,

The newly' inaugurated Eastbourne branch of the League of Mothers held its second meeting recently, when Mrs. Kersley presided. There was an excellent attendance, and many new mem;bers were enrolled. Mrs. E. W." Wise was unanimously ~ elected president. Miss Goodwill sang, accompanied by Mis. Collins, and Mrs. Lowe gave a recitation, the brief programme being much enjoyed. The ' speakers", were Mesdames Lowe, Collins, and Dawson, officers of Lower Hutt branch- of the league, each giving a short -talk on various aspects of the league.- Much helpful and interesting information concerning the working-of a.'branch, was given.: The speakers were accorded x a hearty vote of thanks,: and the meeting closed with the singing of the- Anthem. ■".-•_ Croquet at Upper Hutt. The "Upper Hutt Croquet Club hold its annual meeting in the club's pavilion recently, when there, -was a good attendance of members. Reports for the year were read and adopted, and the election of officers resulted as follows:—President, Mrs. A. L. Harper; secretary, Mrs. W. J. Spaekman'; treasurer, Mrs. P. Jane; captain,' Mrs. B. Greig; general committee, Mesdames, Harper, Spaekman, Jane, Greig, Benge, Mumby, Duff, Keys, Pepper, McHattie, Findlay, and Miss F. Watson. / • Successful Artist. '. ■.. For the last twenty-five years Canadian women have been excluded from, the Royal Canadian Academy; it is therefore the cause of much satisfaction in women's circles that it recently reopened its fellowship to women by the appointment of Miss Marion Long, an artist of great renown. It is hoped that now, after the exclusion of women from: the academy, has. been given' up in principle, other' appointments of women artists of merit will follow. An Amusing Suggestion. •■'■'■; A correspondent, writing to a southern exchange,- makes rather a <cprieeless-''' suggestion. He saysr •" Correspondents have complained of nocturnal canine concerts and one mentioned the health officer. It seems . more like a case for the SJP.C.A. or a. ..yet. The. dogs are probably ill-fed,-badly housed, or tied up continuously. A .healthy, contented- dog does: not howl. If they are: puppies they are probably lonely. Like a small child taken from its parents and. put alone into a strange room, puppies howl. If there-as no ; other dog or a cat, give- them a, hot water bottle for a few nights. The rough cover and warmth make them think they have company, and dispel loneliness.'^' Lewisham Skating Party. ■---■'■:-- t ■'<■■"■'■■'■ Tonight is. the night set aside for the Lewisham skating party, which promises, to be- a most enjoyable function. All sorts of attractions have been arrangedy and a very gay evening's entertainment is assured. ".. -'■'■'■ Juniblet Sales. ..-,..- ; Mothers of families, would do well to visit the jumble sale being held, tomorrow by the Y.W.C.A. in St. Thomas'

Hall, Newtowh. There', they will find a good supply of men's, womeu's, and children's clothing at reasonable prices. A special feature of the sale will be the large range of garments suitable for remodelling for children's coats.and frocks; The Y.W.C.A. will also offer .a. good selection of second-hand clothing at a jumble sale to be held in its building, 5 Boulcott Street, tomorrow evening The pioeeeds arc to be given to the girls' "Marathon," and patrons will have tho satisfaction not only of procuring garments at bargain prices but also of assisting the association in its drive for funds. Home-made Dainties. "Good business" was the impression treated upon folk passing the "Brooklyn Women's Shop Day" for the Y.W.C.A. last year. Though theatmospheie was cheerless outside, it certainly was not inside, for the delicious odour of hot girdle cakes and maple syrup luied people in wheie these confections were served hot. Then there v.ere the dainty cakes, and tempting savouries, made by the ladies, not more noted for their good woiks than for the excellence of their cooking. Friday of this week is Brooklyn's "day," and "Iho shop" this year will be opposite the "biother organisation," the V.M.C.A., Upper Willis Street. All those who feel-drawn to do alittle to help a cause ,so necessary to young girls of any' community- will be most welcome, whether they "bring" or whether they "buy." "it is hardly I necessary to state that organisations dependent on the generosity of the pub-1 lie -are having to work very hard for I their very existence, and "there 'will | be many a woman in the city who 'will like to feel she is helping as well as giving her family a treat over the weekend. Girls' "Maxathon." The-second public announcement of the Marathon Runners'" progress will

be made at a gathering of competing \ firms at-thi»: Y.WIC. A: this'evening. An attractive .programme of : community singing-"(led by Mr. Will Mason), exhibition : dancing, and humorous sketches .has'ibeen,, arjangedj and an. informal dane'e is to follow!: It is anticipated that there will be a large gathering of supporters to. speed the "runners" on the last lap of the race. A Social' Evening. Mr. and Mrs. Tom McLaren ga^e a very pleasant entertainment,- at their home at Hataitai Tecently,- in honour iof thedr daughter, Miss Nora McLaren. There were many friends present, including ■ Miss McLaren's grandfather, Mr. Marcus Marks. Kindly and amusing speeches were made, a special one iii reference to Mr. Marks, who replied in amusing fashion. .
