OTAKI CANDIDATES WORK
CHORAL IMPROVED FILLY
(By "Raagatira.")
The majority of the Trcntham horses to compete at Otaki ovor. the coming weekend were galloped this morning. Conditions were ideal, with both the trial grass and plough open, and times were particularly fast for the period of the season.
On the plough. Purse (J.'.K. Robertson) ran seven furlongs comfortably in lmin 32see. Te Ua (R, Morris) went a mile, doing the last seven in lmiu 31Jsec, and the last half-mile in 52} sec.
On the grass the best effort was that of the two-year-old Choral (J. I. McCauley), who beat Bay Area (J. Gillett) by five lengths over five furlongs in lmin 3sec, the last half-mile iii. 49 4-ssec. Choral, who will probably come in on the second day, went particularly well, but Bay Area is capable of better than she produced, her rider not appearing to get the best out of her.
Palace (McCauley) also galloped attractively in beating Misfire (E. J. Maekie) by three lengths over the same distance in lmin 3isee, the last halfmile in 50 l-ssec. Palace, who likes the going firm, is not engaged at Otaki, but he will probably race at Foxton a few days later. He has been entered both on the flat and over hurdles, but after this morning's gallop his hurdling debut will undoubtedly be delayed a little longer.
Lovecourt (McCauley) came away from Chile (Robertson) at the end of their six furlongs, winning the trial by three lengths in lmin 19sec, the last half-mile in Sl^sec.
■ Milnrow (L. Harding) finished . a length in front of Eoderick Dhu (A. Henshaw) over five furlongs in lmin 6sec, the last half-mile in 52seci but the latter's rider lost an iron half-way down the straight.
The only jumping was done by Flower (P. Hobson), who, after crossing the pony hurdle boldly, was sent over two of ttfe bigger hurdles; giving a much improved display on her first effort last Saturday. So pleased was her trainer (H. Pritehard) that he sent her over the two schooling fences-again, and she jumped them confidently with a good turn of pace on. "That means she will go to Foxton now," Pritehard remarked.
Gladinm and Araios were not sent against the watch. Capetown and Vitaphone left early for Otaki, where they will do their final work.
According to report received at Trentham the course at Otaki'has'not been so good as it is at present for many winters, and if the weather holds till the 'weekend the going should be in splendid galloping order. "
