STOWAWAY FINED £5
On a charge of stowing away on the express steamer Wahine at Lyttelton last .night, Joseph Yiscoe was lined £5, in default one month's imprisonment, by Mr. E. Page, S.M., in the Magistrate's Court this morning. Sub-Inspector Martin said that the accused had apparently walked on board ship about 6 p.m., and ho was discovered about two hours later by one of the ship's officers. He had no money in his possession and had a substantial list of previous convictions. It was not the recovery of the fare that was the chief concern of the company but he asked the Magistrate to impose a deterrent penalty. The accused said he was unable to obtain employment in the South Island and was trying to return to the north where he belonged. "
