DIVERSION OF TRADE
(To the Editor.)
Sir, —Regarding Mr. Coates's statement that the exchange had not diverted trado to Australia, tho following is a very glaring case, which happened in my business last week, amounting to close on £700. , English articles cost in England 16s 6d, plus G5 per cent., 27s 3d. Australian same articles costing 18s 6d, plus 33 1-3 per cent., 24s 3d. . Although the Australian article costs 2s more than the English* article, yet owing to- tho exchange it can be landed here 3s less. Is "this -fair 'to IJritain, who spent over £17,000,000 with us from January to March of this year, while Australia" bought just a little over half a million for the same period? 'How can Britain compete against such unfair treatment?—-I am, etc., ' PYMBO. "
