GUINEAS'S PRELUDE

CAMPANULA'S EARLY WIN

Great was the pleasure of the vast ciowd at the C'ia\en Meeting at Newmaiket to witness the victoiy of Campanula,', in the Column Produce Stakes (1 mile). ;Sir George Bullough's three-year-old' filly, trained by J. Jarvis and ridden with admirable judgment by H. Wragg, won by 9. &hoit head fiom Loid Astoi's tinee-yeai-old Bright Bud (in receipt of 121b), who was four" lengths 111 fiont of Sir A. Bailey's Valerius. This -was the most important e\ ent of the second -afternoon of the meetmg'and aroused much interest. Campanula was running for the first time as a three-year-old.*- '

"Hotspur" ("Daily Telegiaph") wxites: 'Throughout the Jast 'quarter of a mile one realised the issue was going to be between Campanula and Blight Bird, with Light Biocade now right out ofi it. I thought the weight would now on the filly and that she would be beaten. For a. moment that looked like being the case. For Bright Bird, by inches, began to close up until he was only a head, or slightly less than that, behind. That, however, was as far as he got. The filly ran magnificently.

"Campanula showed she would not be beaten, though Harry Wragg was doing no more than hand-nd.ing her as strongly as he could." He did not feel for his whip; indeed, he had been strictly enjoined on no account to hit the filly. So for the last fifty yards did colt and filly mn home straight and true, stride for stride, the one fighting on grimly, the other, unable to'gain an inch. They maintained positions peifectly in that way to the winning post, and a stude past it Wragg patted his filly on the neck to express his thanks and admiration. It "was the finest example of .racing between-two that.l have seen- for many a day."

Bright Bird has had a brief but unlucky career so far, but his day, of course, will come. Campanula blew quite a lot after the race,: showing that she wanted it and that she will be- e\en better for it. Jack Jarvis has trained her splendidly*, and will be appropriately rewarded. If all goes well shetshould take classic honours this season. Campanula is by Blandford out of

Vespei Bell (dam of Muezzin, Tinkle, Belfry, and Re\eillon), by Pommern out of St Catrme, by St. Frusquin out of Mine dOr, by Goldseeker. She ■» as bred by Sir George Bullough. The late lord Manton gave lloOgs for Vesper Bell when she was

a foal. When Lord Manton's" yearlings

came under the hammer Vesper Bell was ■ bought by Lady Bullough for HOOgns. Eventually she t won, ..three races , of an aggregate, value of £805. Her maximum distance was six furlongs.
