CHESS

LEAGUE MATCHES

FIRST ROUND; RESULTS

' The past week or two have, seen much activity among the' clubs engaged in the competitions held, under the auspices of the Wellington Chess League and all the first-round fixtures have, been completed.

Two old' rival's, the Working Men's and Ngaio Clubs, spent a Very enjoyable evening at the .rooms •of • the former club, Mr. H. Shanks extending a. cordial welcome to the visitors. Reference was made to the illness of Mr. F. K. Kelling, who, although still in hospital, insisted1 on representing his club at board No. 1, and thus retained his unique record: of.~ never, having -.missed a match. A tribute was paid to Mr. Kelling by those present singing "For He's a Jolly Good Fellow," with the earnest wish that he may make a quick recovery to normal health. The matches resulted in wins for the home side in each of the three grades. Another contest which deserves special mention was the Shell Club versus Brooklyn o&i'i 7-'? ,the B grade competition. The Shell Club Is the newest club to become affiliated to the league, and as regards standard of play is rather an unknown quantity. If, however, (he result of this match, 4%-Hi, is to ha taken as any indication of the merit of. the club, it will not be surprising to see other aspirants to honours being surprised. : It is too early in the season to make such useful comment on the prospects, but It is clear that the competitions will hold, considerable interest and the second round is~ eagerly awaited.

Tho ftill scores for the first round . are as follows, Hutt No. 1, Wellington, and Shell haying the bye In their respective grades :—
