SOCIAL PROGRESS
INTERESTING AFTERNOON
: The pleasant reception.: loom at the home of Mrs. Alex Gillies in Willis Street was well filled yesterday afternoon, when the members of the Social Progress Movement held a meeting, Mrs. Bennie being in the chair. Several new members were welcomed.
Mrs. Bennie spoke bf. the steady growth of the movement, and of its ideals and work. This work, she said, met a special need, and was not bounded in any way but-by the good of humanity and the immediate necessities of the time. She read a poem "What' We Need," and concluded by introducing and welcoming Miss Mary Richmond, who was the speaker for the afternoon.

Mrs. H. D. Bennett, in thanking Miss Bichmond for her address, spoke of the necessity for women to think seriously in these difficult days, and touched, on several points in both Miss Richmond's and Mrs. Bennies speeches. She was sure, she said, that women were always learning, and .'would make use of their knowledge better and better as time went on. The necessity for the upbuilding of an atmosphere of peace in th"c. world was 'ever, present, and knowledge was necessary to judge and act wisely. ' . _ The vote of thanks proposed was carried _ with great heartiness. • Miss Kutner gave some charmingand appropriate recitations, and was cordially thanked, arid' later Mrs. Gillies was also thanked for her hospitality and the loan of her charming room. . An excellent afternoon tea was served, and members had an opportunity of talking over the fine address they had- had from Miss Richmond.
