SURPRISING. SURPLUS
TAXATION TO BE REDUCED

DUBLIN, May 9,
The Irish Free State Budget created a surprise owing to a surplus of £1,202,000. Taxation will-bo limited to £560,000, while £640,000 will be allotted to the public services. ' A reduction of 6d in the £ income tax accounts for £250,000^ reduction of tea duty by 4d a lb, £290,000; Kepublican Army pensions, £180,000; relief grants, £150,000; housing, £60,000; widows' and orphans' pensions, £250,000. There will be an extra rebate on home-grown tobacco. Nine new Customs duties will yield £150,000 next year. The revenue is estimated at £28,972,000 and expenditure .at £36,067,000, while £7,212,000 will be borrowed. The Finance Minister, Mr. McEntee, declared that the Free State was stronger financially'than, when the I Government took office.
