SOUTHLAND FIXTURE

PROSPECTS FOR TOMORROW

The Winter Meeting-of the Southland Kaeing Club is to be held tomorrow and on Saturday. Fields are very good for the opening, day, with the exception of the open sprint, in which five only have been paid up for, the cx-Xorth Islander All Humbug heading the quintet; One of the most inteiciting races on the card will be the Southland. Steeplechase, ten being engaged, the list being headed by Quinopal,.who was placed in his two starts over country at River ton at Easter. He has a stiff impost, but at his best he would be able "to account, for this ■field. Dunmure was third in the minor steeplechase the first day at that meeting/ and he then won on the second and third days, evidently improving as he gained experience of the country,l and with his handy impost in this race he is a very likely runner. Umtali showed up at.Kiverton, and Cultivator is nicely placed. West Dome and Trench Fleet complete the list of possibles, while there is oE course the snr-pii-c. element engaged.- The first quaitet mentioned promise to fight it out. The elas>s is not particularly strong in the Southland Cup, apait from The Smuggler, but under the conditions which "will probably prevail-the-weight may tell at the finish: Steeton, Palermo, and Signaller are good enough to -Keep the topweight busy, and between them they ought to make a race-of' it. _ All Humbug will bo suited by th« small field in the Flying Handicap,, and while he has done most of his recent racing over middle distances he will not be found •wanting in this sprint event; . Water I Power is a good mudlark and appeals to I be the most dangerous of the others. ' The practical joker informed the railway clerk that it was Mr. B. S. Irwin (president of the Forbury'Chib) who was speaking. Acting on this information, the clerk communicated with all railway 'stations and had special trains to Dunedin cancelled. On reading the morning paper, the clerk saw that the meeting was to be held on Saturday. He telephoned.Mr. Irwin's home, when he learned from Sir. Irwin, that the club had made no decision and' that it was not he who had telephoned at one o'clock in the morning. Fortunately, the Fo-.bury Club eventually did decide not to : ace on Saturday. It is understood that iari endeavour' will be made to locate the practical joker.'■with a .view to a prosecution, . ■ . , .-■ .
