MAN SERIOUSLY HURT
WANGANUI SENSATION
PETROL STATION RANSACKED
(By Telegrapn.—Press Association.)
WANGANUI, This Day.
A sensation was caused in Wanganui this morning when it was learned that a night attendant at a petrol service station at the corner of The Avenue and Plymouth Street, Charles Herbert Quinlan, aged 20, had been attacked at 1.30 a.m. by two young men. He was struck several times on the head with a paling, his hands and legs were bound, and the premises were ransacked and a small quantity of silver and stamps stolen.
Subsequently Constable Christmas and Detective Walsh arrested two local young men, Thomas Benjamin Raymond and Robert Woodham. They were charged this morning with robbing and wounding Quinlan and were remanded until May. 17.
Detective Walsh, in opposing bail, said that a murderous attack had been made on Quinlan, who was in hospital in a serious condition. One of the assailants called out to Quinlan that he wanted four gallons of benzine in a hurry. As soon as Quinlan opened the door he was dazzled by the lights of a car, and was struck on the head and knocked down. He then received further blows. ■
