MERCANTILE LEAGUE
MATCH WITH SOUTHERNERS
The annual cricket match between the Wellington Mercantile League, which is represented by its second eleven, and the Christchurch City and Suburban Association was commenced at Kilbirnie this morning in perfect conditions. Wellington won the toss and batted first. A good recovery after a bad,, start enabled them to reach 181 before the last wicket fell at 12.15 p.m., when th& luncheon adjournment was' taken. Against the bowling of Cawtheray and Sincock, Wellington's early batsmen could make little progress, and the first four wickets fell for 19 runs. Melville was run out after a good innings which included seven 4's, and Crisp_then gave the total a good lift. Had it not been for good partnerships for the last two wickets, however, the team's total would have been poor. Martin played a particularly strong hand at this stage, carrying his bat for the highest score, including nine 4's. Crisp's total comprised five 4's and a single. The innings occupied a little over two hours. . ..'Results:— . . ' WELLINGTON.
